BIAC urges Ministers to improve business environment in Central Asia region

Mr. Sen, TUSIADParis, 18 June 2010 – Speaking at the first OECD Central Asia Initiative Ministerial Roundtable, BIAC member, Mr. Tamer Sen, Head of Department in TÜSIAD International (picture on the right), formally presented business recommendations to Ministers aimed at opening up the region to trade and investment in order to ensure an enabling environment for sustainable economic growth.

The Ministerial Roundtable, co-chaired by France and the European Commission, brought together Ministers of Economy from Central Asia Initiative countries, Heads of Investment Promotion Agencies, representatives from OECD member countries, as well as business, academia and international organisations, to discuss challenges for investment, competitiveness and development of small- and medium-sized enterprises in Central Asia.

Mr. Sen emphasised many of the key messages in BIAC’s Statement to the Ministerial Roundtable, particularly the need to remove existing barriers to trade and investment, as well as to ensure a regulatory framework that is stable, predictable, non-discriminatory and transparent. Mr. Sen also underlined the importance of strengthening relations between Central Asian governments and their respective business communities, so that business views are more fully taken into consideration when planning national policy reforms in the region.

The Central Asia Initiative was launched in November 2008 by the OECD and the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), aiming to improve the business climate in Central Asian economies, including Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, and to strengthen co-operation and sharing of best practices between OECD and Central Asia countries.

BIAC members interested in becoming involved in future BIAC activities concerning the Central Asia region are kindly invited to contact the BIAC Secretariat.
